Schedule and structure of the retreat

Our programs are weekly based; all retreats start on Sunday and end on Saturday.  Our programs include transportation to and from the center, shared accommodations, all meals, classes, excursions and ceremonies.

Which plants/medicines do you work with?

The Ancestral Medicines that we share at our Arkana Ayahuasca Spiritual Retreat Centers include; San Pedro or "Huachuma" (originally from the Andes Mountains of Peru).  Sapo, or also known as "Bufo" are from the secretions of the Sonoran Desert Toad which contain an extremely potent and powerful medicine known as 5-MeO-DMT. (Rapé) which is composed of tobacco (as its primary ingredient) and other medicinal plants from the Amazon jungle. And of course Ayahuasca, or "Yage" (originally from the Amazon jungle.)

Which Shamans do you work with?

Arkana’s highly-trained Shipibo Master Shamans come from an unbroken lineage of plant medicine knowledge passed down through thousands of years of indigenous Amazonian culture. They are lovingly dedicated to the healing processes of our guests. They work closely with Ayahuasca and other master plant teachers of the jungle with healing songs (icaros), capabilities, and knowledge with integrity and honor, for truly profound and deeply healing work.

What happens in an Ayahuasca ceremony?

Some people experience strong visions, some people connect with the medicine on the physical level to receive healing.

Sometimes visions may be distractful, in this case the medicine may guide you through the physical sensations such as: yawning, vomiting, diarrhea, shaking, crying, and sweating. In any case, you should know that the medicine is working on you in a way that suits you the best. All you have to do is to breathe, relax your body and let the medicine do its magic.

Purging is one of the most important stages of the ceremony since purging is considered to be a cleansing process. Everyone is experiencing different types of purging. Here are some of the most common ones: yawning, vomiting, diarrhea, shaking, crying, and sweating.

Along with the shamans, you will be accompanied by an incredible team of facilitators that are well-trained in helping you with anything you need during each ceremony. Just turn your flashlight on, and one of us will come help you.

How do I get ready for the retreat?

Ayahuasca and other plant medicines offer a level of knowledge and power that should be accessed only in the right environment and with the right preparation beforehand, and support during and after the experience. These medicines are far from recreational, and must be treated with the utmost respect and care.

It's important to stick to the Ayahuasca Dieta for as long as you can before your Ayahuasca ceremony. As the medicine will try to clean your body out first before you can receive some of the deeper more powerful healing teachings.

Which retreat location is right for me?

This is a tough question because you can’t really go wrong with any of the two. Having said that, there are slight differences between the two:

(a) Setting is an obvious one: Jungle vs. Mountain location with everything that entails.  The jungle brings an added layer to aya ceremonies impossible to replicate elsewhere, the downside is the weather and mosquitoes we get at times. The mountain aside from being close to Machu Picchu involves a bit of cold weather at night, so you need to adjust accordingly.

(b) Level of Comfort. The Sacred Valley is slightly more comfortable than our jungle retreat for obvious reasons.  It has hot water, private bathrooms in every room and down comforters. Having said that, we recently renovated our jungle center. You can check out our new facilities in this blog post.

(c) Program Schedule.  Although we serve the same medicine with the same shamans, the number of ceremonies vary slightly.  In the amazon, we do 4 Ayahuasca ceremonies/wk, while in the Valley we do 3 Aya ceremonies + 1 San Pedro ceremony honoring local Andean culture.

For long should I come?

Length of time really depends on the issues you need to work through. For a lot of people, 1 week is enough, but some require additional time sitting with the medicine. The last thing you want to do is book 1 week and have to leave with some unfinished business. If you can do it, we recommend coming for 2 weeks to cover your bases.

For those looking to heal severe trauma, deep-rooted addictions or simply want to do in-depth work, book the 3 week program.
